AMIN’S NXT GREAT AMERICAN BASH REVIEW
WEDNESDAY JULY 8, 2020
FULL SAIL UNIVERSITY IN WINTER PARK, FL

[HOUR ONE]

Video package opened the show recapping night one of NXT Great American Bash with Asuka’s appearance and highlighting my favourite Io Shirai’s win over Sasha Bank in the main event. The video transitioned to a highlight package promoting the Winner Take All match between NXT Champion Adam Cole and NXT North American Champion Keith Lee. The camera panned inside Full Sail University as Mauro Ranallo, Beth Phoenix and Tom Phillips called the action.

STREET FIGHT: CANDICE LERAE vs. MIA YIM

This was good as both LeRae and Yim wore street clothes for this match to add a different feel. Yim attacked LeRae during her entrance and then tossed weapons inside the ring. LeRae and Yim exchanged Kendo Stick strikes. They battled in the crowd as LeRae blew fire extinguisher into Yim’s face. There was a cool spot as Yim delivered a running dropkick off a platform sending LeRae crashing through a table.

Yim charged but LeRae countered with a drop toe hold sending her into a chair. LeRae placed Yim on a chair and followed with a running dropkick for a two count. LeRae whacked Yim with a trash can lid. LeRae laid a table as a platform against the top turnbuckle. Yim delivered a Hook Kick to LeRae for a double down. Yim placed a trash can onto LeRae and then connected with a running cannonball senton for a two count.

Yim pulled out some Brass Knuckles giving a nice mention to Willam Regal the GM of NXT. LeRae stopped Yim and whacked her with a steel chair. They battled for position on the table as LeRae nailed Yim with the Brass Knuckles. LeRae delivered an Avalanche Swinging Neckrbreaker sending Yim onto a stack of chairs for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: CANDICE LERAE

[Amin’s Analysis: A solid Street Fight to open the show as the match featured some good wrestling and evened out with the use of weapons. A solid performance from Yim here who put on a great showing in back-to-back weeks. After taking the first fall in last week’s Women’s Fatal-4-Way Elimination Match, this was a nice comeback win for LeRae who has really clicked since turning heel.]

Mark Henry predicted Keith Lee will win the Winner’s Take All Match.

Tom Phillips previewed the next match between Bronson Reed and Tony Nese. Phillips noted Reed took issues with Nese’s treatment during his match with Leon Ruff.

BRONSON REED vs. TONY NESE

Reed showed off his power early delivering a Military Press Slam and then connected with a back seton as Nese rolled to the floor. Nese stopped Reed’s momentum by connected with a shoulder tackle and then applied an inside cradle for a two cont.

Nese delivered a Slingshot Neck Snap and then followed with a nice looking Springboard Moonsault but Reed kicked out. Nese charged but Reed got him with a lariat. Reed climbed to the turnbuckle and delivered a Super Splash to Nese for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: BRONSON REED

[Amin’s Analysis: Nese is a very underrated wrestler who always puts on a solid match. A nice showcase for Reed who has talent and has continued to improve. Overall, this was fine and worked to get Reed over as upcoming star on NXT.]

Robert Stone and Aliyah found Shotzi Blackheart backstage who was looking very cute riding around in her mini-tank. Stone tried to recruit Shotzi to join his brand. Shotzi noted the Robert Stone Brand is a dumpster fire. Stone wasn’t pleased as he tossed his coffee cup. The cup apparently landed on Killian Dain who tossed Stone to the floor. Shotzi then drove her mini-tank over Stone’s foot.

NXT Champion Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong were shown arriving to the arena.

JOHNNY GARGANO vs. ISIAH ‘SWERVE’ SCOTT

The match began with some great mat wrestling as both Gargano and Scott battled for position. Gargano went for a running Hurricanrana but Scott showed off his athleticism by landing on his feet. Scott connected with a handstand head scissors sending Gargano to the floor and then connected with a Fosbury Flop. Scott hit a flying rolling uppercut and then connected with some jabs in the corner.

Gargano stopped Scott’s momentum with a Slingshot Spear for a two count. Scott avoided a Superkick and planted Gargano with a Brainbuster. There was a nice sequence as Gargano connected with a step-up enzuigiri but Scott responded with House Call for a double down spot. Gargano applied a combination GargaNo Escape/STF but Scott countered into a rollup for a two count.

Gargano delivered a tilt-a-whirl, went to transition into the GargaNo Escape but Scott countered with the JML Driver for a close two count. Scott went to climb the turnbuckle but Gargano rolled to the apron. Scott leaped off the turnbuckle but Gargano moved and rammed him into the ring spot. Gargano planted Scott with a Poison Hurricanrana on the floor and then delivered the One Final Beat DDT for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: JOHNNY GARGANO

[Amin’s Analysis: I mentioned in my NXT Primer for PWTorch this would be a great showcase match for Scott and it was as he got the chance to show how great a wrestler he can be as he worked very hard. I had expectations for this match and it delivered as there were some great counters, transitions and sequences leading to the finish. Gargano is just terrific as he always puts on a show for the fans. This is a match worth watching on a stacked show.]

[HOUR TWO]

Next, they aired an awesome highlight package previewing next week’s NXT Women’s Championship match between my favourite Io Shirai vs. Tegan Nox. Shirai  spoke about how she and Nox were very similar. Nox spoke about no longer being the comeback kick and this is who she is. Shirai noted the difference between them is that she does it alone, while Nox needs help from her friends to get things done. Nox noted Shirai got help from Asuka last week but noted Shirai was right as it was a weakness of her. Nox noted this times. she’s faster, stronger and shinier. Shirai noted she will be waiting next week.

[Amin’s Analysis: This video package ruled building up the Women’s Championship match for next week. Nox’s reasoning for the match was solid, problem remains her character is stale and something is just missing. The highlight of this package was my favourite Io Shirai who’s the most cutest and beautiful looking mermaid when she’s underwater and she immediately grabs your attention. Shirai is presented as the superstar of the NXT Women’s Division and should be champion for a long time. This should be a great match and first of hopefully many victories for my favourite Io Shirai as NXT Women’s Champion.]

LEGADO DEL FANTASMA (NXT CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPION SANTOS ESCOBAR, JOAQUIN WILDE & RAUL MENDOZA) vs. DRAKE MAVERICK & BREEZANGO (FANDANGO & TYLER BREEZE)

Breeze and Fandango delivered a double running boot to Wilde for a two count. Breeze connected with a neck breaker but Mendoza kicked out. Wilde made his comeback delivered a Slingshot Moonsault to Breeze for a near fall. Fandango got a hot tag as he delivered a Falcon Arrow to Wilde and followed with a Slingshot Splash to Legado del Fantasma on the floor.

With the referee distracted, Wilde rammed Fandango into the ring steps. Escobar worked the match in his favour placing Fandango in a seated abdominal stretch. Maverick got a hot tag as he delivered rapid fire strikes to Esbobar and followed with a flying bulldog. Maverick went to climb the turnbuckle Escobar countered by draping him on the turnbuckle. Escobar delivered the Phantom Driver to Maverick for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: SANTOS ESCOBAR, JOAQUIN WILDE & RAUL MENDOZA

[Amin’s Analysis: Although they didn’t show much as a collective unit, this was fine start for Legado Del Fantasma as they have formed something good in the past weeks. Overall, a fine match and showing by Maverick leading to an eventual title match down the road. Once KUSHIDA, Jake Atlas and Isiah ‘Swerve’ Scott get added into the mix, the Cruiserweight division will be showcased as an important part of NXT which it’s starting to show with Santos as champion.]

McKenzie Mitchell interviewed Candice LeRae and Johnny Gargano backstage. There was a funny moment as LeRae kept asked McKenzie to repeat that she was victorious in her match. Gargano noted he and LeRae are the best power couple in the universe. Gargano noted there are wrong he need to make right. LeRae noted the same as well and walked off.

Highlight package aired on the NXT Tag Team Champions Imperium (Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel)

WWE Champion Drew McIntyre predicted Adam Cole will win the Winner Take All Match.

MERCEDES MARTINEZ vs. SANTANA GARRETT

Garrett got some shine delivering a handspring back elbow but Martinez no-sold it and delivered a running boot. Garett connected with a Superkick but Martinez responded with a lariat. Martinez planted Garrett with a Fisherman’s Buster for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: MERCEDES MARTINEZ

[Amin’s Analysis: No-selling most of Garrett’s offence, this was a solid showing by Martinez presenting both her mat based wrestling mixed with MMA strikes. If done right Martinez could be a strong challenger for my favourite Io Shirai who should win in the end to continue to present Io as the top star in NXT.]

Highlight package aired hyping up Damian Priest vs. Cameron Grimes

Shawn Michaels and Mick Foley gave they’re predictions for the Winner Take All Matches.

WINNER TAKE ALL MATCH FOR THE NXT CHAMPIONSHIP & NXT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP: NXT CHAMPION ADAM COLE vs. NXT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPION KEITH LEE

Cole moved as Lee crashed into the Plexiglas. Cole delivered a pump kick and followed with a neck breaker for a near fall. Cole worked the match in his favour placing Lee in a seated Figure-4 head scissors.

Cole was setting up for the Last Shot but Lee countered with a spinning powerslam for a two count. Lee went to climb the turnbuckle but Cole countered with Superkick and followed with a backcraker for a two count. Lee showed off his power delivering a delayed Superplex to Cole for a two count. Cole delivered a step-up enzuigiri and followed with a Superkick.

Cole was setting up for the Last Shot but Lee countered with a Sprit Bomb. Lee looked to have the match won but Cole placed one finger on the rope to force a break. Lee sent Cole flying with a pounce and followed with a one-arm Spinebuster for a two count. Lee climbed the turnbuckle and delivered a Moonsault but Cole kept kicking out. Lee called for the Big Bang Catastrophe but Cole countered with a pair of Superkicks.

Cole delivered a pair of Superkicks and followed with a Last Shot but Lee kicked out. Cole called for the second Last Shot but Lee countered with a huge lariat. Cole went for the Panama Sunrise but Lee countered with a Spirt Bomb. Lee delivered the Big Bang Catastrophe to Cole for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: KEITH LEE WON THE NXT CHAMPIONSHIP & NXT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP

There was a great shot of Karrion Kross & Scarlett watching on as confetti filled the ring as Lee celebrated with both the NXT and North American Championships.

[Amin’s Analysis: This was a tremendous match as there were some awesome counters, near falls and sequences leading to the finish. Standing ovation for Adam Cole as he was the MVP of NXT and set the standard as the greatest NXT Champion at 403 days. It will interesting to see if Cole stays in NXT or moves onto Raw or SmackDown. Because, I have a feeling Fish, O’Reilly & Strong will stay with Cole on NXT or move with him to Raw or SmackDown. A great moment for Keith Lee who’s a tremendous wrestler and seems like such a genuine likeable person. The closing shot of Kross was great as that looks to be the next program as it was teased when Lee smashed the hourglass. The question now is will both title be at stake or will Lee have two challengers and two matches at the next TakeOver or NXT TV championship match.]

[OVERALL THOUGHTSThis was another great NXT special as the show was heavily filled with some great wrestling matches from start to finish. The specials worked as they presented my favourite Io Shirai as the top star in the NXT Women’s Division on Night One. They presented Keith Lee as the top star in the NXT Men’s Division on Night Two. The next couple of week’s of NXT should be interesting to watch as I expect the announcement of TakeOver for SummerSlam weekend should be coming soon. Looking forward to next week’s show and watch my favourite Io Shirai first title defence as NXT Women’s Champion.
