Io Shirai (WWE NXT Women's Champion)AMIN’S NXT TAKEOVER: IN YOUR HOUSE REVIEW
SUNDAY JUNE 7, 2020
FULL SAIL UNIVERSITY IN WINTER PARK, FL

Todd Pettengill welcomed us the show and hyped the top matches on the show. This was followed by a performance from Code Orange. After the performance ended, the camera panned and showed future NXT stars and recruit pounding on the glass chanting “NXT.”

CANDICE LERAE, DAKOTA KAI & RAQUEL GONZALEZ vs. MIA YIM, SHOTZI BLACKHEART & TEGAN NOX

Kai and Nox began as they exchanged pinning combinations for near falls. Shotzi tagged in and delivered a reverse Slingblade to Kai. There was a great sequence as Yim connected with a tope to Kai and Gonzalez. LeRae delivered  a Springboard plancha onto everyone on the floor. This was followed by Nox hitting a Molly Go Round onto everyone on the floor. Shotzi placed LeRae in a bridging double underhook but Kai broke the hold.

Yim got a hot tag and delivered bridging Dragon Suplex but LeRae kicked out. Yim called for Sole Food but LeRae countered with a Catch Suplex. Nox charged but Gonzalez countered by hitting a Powerbomb for a two count. LeRae and Yim brawled to the back. Nox delivered a Chokeslam to Kai. Nox and Shotzi delivered an assisted Sliced Bread to Gonzalez. Nox nailed Kai with the Shiniest Wizard for the 1,2,3.

WINNERS: TEGAN NOX, SHOTZI BLACKHEART & MIA YIM

(Amin’s AnalysisA fun match as there were some great sequences leading to the finish as everyone worked hard. Liked how LeRae and Yim brawled to the back to keep their program going. Nox and Shotzi are great to watch as they make a terrific team. The pair of Kai and Gonzalez has clicked as they work well together. Thumbs up to open the show.)

There was an old school add with current NXT stars selling new WWE Good Humour cookie sandwiches.

Rhea Ripley was shown warming up backstage.

FINN BALOR vs. DAMIAN PRIEST

The match began at a fast pace as Balor nailed Priest with a Woo Dropkick before the bell rang. Balor went for a Slingblade but Priest countered by planting him on the ring apron. Priest delivered the Broken Arrow. There was a fun exchange as Priest connected with a Cyclone Boot but Balor responded with a Pele Kick for a two count. Priest stopped Balor’s momentum after planting him with a Razor’s Edge onto the ring apron.

Priest charged but Balor countered with a Slingblade. Balor went for a Woo Dropkick but Priest countered with a pair of Cyclone Boots. Priest called for The Reckoning but Balor countered with a Final Cut and then connected with a Woo Dropkick. Balor went for the Coup De Grace but Priest countered with a Super Chokeslam for a two count. Priest teased a Razor’s Edge onto the ring steps but Balor blocked. Balor knocked Priest off the ring apron as he took a nasty bump onto the ring stomps. Balor followed by hitting a pair of Coup De Grace for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: FINN BALOR

(Amin’s Analysis: A terrific hard-hitting match between these two as there were some great counters and sequences leading to the finish. A breakout performance from Priest here as he looked great and worked really hard. Balor has been tremendous since coming over to NXT and did a great job making Priest look great. Will be interesting to see who Balor faces next as championship program would be ideal.)

NXT Champion Adam Cole did Bret Hart’s old ICOPRO spot.

My favourite Io Shirai was shown warming up backstage for her match.

KEITH LEE vs. JOHNNY GARGANO – NXT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

Keith Lee came out wearing a jacket and trunks that said “Black Lives Matter.” The match with Gargano and Lee having a great counter exchange. Gargano went for a running cannonball but Lee caught. Gargano tried to leave the door to the staging was locked. Gargano took control after hitting a step-up enzuigiri and then worked over the injured hand of Lee. Gargano went for his Slingshot Spear but Lee countered with a modified GTR for a near fall.

Lee went for the Big Bang Catastrophe but Gargano countered into an inside cradle for a near fall. Lee hit a Popup Spinebuster but Gargano rolled to the floor. There was a cool spot as Gargano delivered a tope transitioning into a DDT on the floor. The referee began his 10-count but Gargano broke it up. There was an awesome spot as Lee delivered a pounce sending Gargano through the Plexiglas as LeRae came out.

Yim appeared from behind and brawled with LeRae. With the referee distracted Gargano poked Lee in the eyes with his car keys. Gargano delivered One Final Beat (Slingshot DDT) but Lee kicked out for a great two count. Gargano kept hitting Superkicks but Lee refused to stay down. Gargano mocked Lee who responded by hitting a huge Spirt Bomb. Lee planted Gargano with a second Spirt Bomb and then delivered the Big Bang Catastrophe for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: KEITH LEE RETAINED THE NXT NORTH AMERICAN TITLE

(Amin’s Analysis: This wasn’t the classic high-octane TakeOver classic that you would expect from these two but instead the match revolved around psychology and working over injured body parts. There were some cool spots like Gargano going through the Plexiglas after the pounce and bringing the use of the car keys. Overall, a good match as Lee has been a terrific champion and Gargano has really shined since turning heel.)

Another old-school add with current NXT stars plugging Good Humour cookie sandwiches.

Charlotte Flair was shown warming up backstage.

ADAM COLE vs. VELVETEEN DREAM – BACKLOT BRAWL FOR THE NXT CHAMPIONSHIP

Adam Cole arrived to the backlot brawl in a Monster Truck. Veleveteen Dream arrived in a Lamborgine. They had cars surrounding the arena with the headlights focused on the ring. Cole tried to leave but Dream smashed the car with his bat. There was a funny spot as an Uber driver arrived but then left. Cole blew fire extinguisher into Dream’s face.

Cole called for the Panama Sunrise but Dream countered with a Superkick. Dream slammed Cole onto a car. Dream went to climb a ladder as Bobby Fish and Roderick Strong appeared. Cole did his “Bay Bay” pose on top of the ladder. Dream punched Cole who fell off the ladder and landed onto the windshield. Cole was bleeding from the wrist. Fish and Strong tossed chairs into the ring. Dexter Lumis slithered from underneath the ring.

Lumis placed both Fish and Strong into the back of trunk. Lumis drove off. Cole went for a Panama Sunrise but Dream countered with the Dream Valley Driver onto a stack of chair for a two count. Cole was seated on a chair as Dream delivered the Purple Rainmaker for a close two count. Cole delivered a low blow to Dream and then followed with the Panama Sunrise onto a stack of chairs for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: ADAM COLE RETAINED THE NXT TITLE

(Amin’s Analysis: Not my favourite cinematic match but from the standpoint of closing a rivalry this did the job. The involvement of Lumis made sense after his masterpiece drawing on NXT TV. Cole vs. Lumis looks be the next title program but could just be a TV program which I’m fine with. My feeling was right Dream wouldn’t win the title as the timing wasn’t right and will be interesting to see where he goes next.  It’s over 372 days as champion for Cole and I’m fine with it as he’s been amazing and always delivers in big matches. Overall, a well worked match.)

Todd Pettengill was shown hyping WWEShop.com merchandise. Pettengill showed showed some NXT stuff which included Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Road Dogg arguing while trying to use a computer.

KARRION KROSS (w/Scarlett) vs. TOMMASO CIAMPA

Kross entrance is just awesome as he’s presented a full superstar. Scarlett singing “Fall and Prey” adds so much to Kross’ presentation. Ciampa delivered strikes but Kross no-sold it and delivered a Doomsday Saito Suplex.Ciampa delivered a running boot but Kross no-sold it and dropped him on the ring apron. Kross sent Ciampa flying with a pair of Doomsday Saito Suplex.

Kross hit a bridging Northern Lights Suplex, maintained control and hit a clothesline. Ciampa fired up delivering huge palm strikes. Ciampa nailed Kross with a running knee and followed with Willow’s Bell for a two count. Ciampa nailed Kross with a pair of running knee strikes. Ciampa called for the Fairytale Ending but Kross countered by hitting a modified F5. Kross applied the Kross Jacket as Ciampa passed out.

WINNER: KARRION KROSS

(Amin’s Analysis: Let me first say, Ciampa is an excellent wrestler, former champion and an established star on NXT. Ciampa is the true professional and I give him full credit for making Kross feel like the next big star on NXT. This was the perfect length and presentation for this match. It’s clear they have strapped the rocket onto Kross’ and after this performance he should be next in line to challenge Cole for the NXT Title. An excellent presentation.)

IO SHIRAI vs. CHARLOTTE FLAIR vs. RHEA RIPLEY – TRIPLE THREAT MATCH FOR THE NXT WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

This is the first Women’s TakeOver main event since Bayley vs. Sasha Banks at NXT TakeOver: Respect in 2015. Charlotte dominated early hitting a neck breaker to Ripley and followed with a Fallaway Slam to Shirai. Ripley went for a cannonball but Charlotte moved as she fell to the mat. Shirai fired up delivered a flying Hurricananra to Charlotte on the floor.Shirai nailed Charlotte with a Tiger Feint Kick and followed with a double stomp. The big spot of the match came when Shirai climbed the set and delivered a beautiful flying crossbody onto both Charlotte and Ripley. They battled for position on the top turnbuckle as Ripley delivered a Super RipTide to Charlotte but Shirai broke the count. Shirai charged but Ripley countered by placing her into an inverted Texas Cloverleaf.

Charlotte broke the hold by attacking both Ripley and Shirai with a kendo stick. Charlotte delivered a spear and then placed Ripley in the Figure-8-Leg Lock. This is where my favourite Io Shirai climbed the turnbuckle and delivered the most beautiful looking Moonsault to Ripley as the referee counted 1.2.3. My favourite Io Shirai won the NXT Women’s Title.

WINNER: IO SHIRAI WON THE NXT WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

(Amin’s Analysis on Io Shirai’s win: Tears of joy. I’ve been waiting for this moment since the day Io Shirai signed with WWE. Shirai is the best female wrestler in WWE and arguably the world. Shirai’s ring movement is flawless and her facial reactions are just perfect. She was the star and had all the big spots in the match. Her dive off the roof of the house was just amazing. The closing presentation with the confetti and streamers was just a joy to watch and see my favourite Io Shirai get the full superstar presentation. Thank you Triple H for finally giving us this moment as I’m looking forward to seeing my favourite Io Shirai run as champion as she will have some amazing matches. I just want to say again, Io Shirai you are so special to me and will always be my favourite.)

(Amin’s Analysis: This was an excellent main event as everyone worked really hard as there were some awesome spots and sequences leading to the terrific finish. Charlotte Flair is a terrific wrestler but gets a bad rap from fans and some of it has to do with WWE’s way of promoting her. I didn’t mind Charlotte not taking the pin in the match as it could set up a rematch. I would like see my favourite Io Shirai beat Charlotte and this way you can establish her as one of the top stars in all of WWE not just NXT. I also want to say hope Ripley is fine after the finish. It will be interesting to see where Ripley goes from here as she lost huge momentum after getting beat at WrestleMania. Ripley is a solid wrestler and will bounce back as she’s talented. A heel turn could help her character.)

Overall Thoughts: NXT TakeOver: In Your House was a very enjoyable show which had some great matches and moments. I really enjoyed the old-school feel with the set and bringing Pettengill back. The presentation of Kross on the show was terrific and was great to see Cole retain his title. Looking forward to seeing what’s next for Balor as he should be placed in a title match after his win. Highlight of the show was finally seeing my favourite Io Shirai become the new NXT Women’s Champion as I’ve waited and wanted to see this moment since she joined NXT. A thumbs up show.
