Io Shirai (WWE NXT)AMIN’S WWE NXT REVIEW
WEDNESDAY MAY 27, 2020
FULL SAIL UNIVERSITY IN WINTER PARK, FL

NXT superstars in the crowd playing the role as fans as Mauro Ranallo, Beth Phoenix and Tom Phillips were on commentary.

GROUP A TRIPLE THREAT NXT CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT MATCH: KUSHIDA (2-1) vs. DRAKE MAVERICK (2-1) vs. JAKE ATLAS (2-1)

The action started at a quick pace as Atlas delivered a Moonsault to KUSHIDA on the floor and followed with a Slingshot Blockbuster to Maverick for a near fall. There was an awesome spot as KUSHIDA placed Altas in a European Clutch and caught Maverick charging with a bridging German Suplex for a double near fall. KUSHIDA connected with handspring, followed by a flying Cannonball Senton to Atlas on the floor.

KUSHIDA planted Maverick with a Tornado DDT and then transitioned into an arm bar. Maverick countered into a rollup for a near fall. Atlas delivered a reverse suplex to KUSHIDA but Maverick made the save. Maverick planted Atlas with a Corner Cutter but KUSHIDA made the save. KUSHIDA went for a handspring but Atlas countered into a German Suplex.

Atlas planted Maverick with his Rainbow DDT but KUSHIDA made the save. KUSHIDA placed Maverick in the Hoverboard Lock against the ropes but Atlas broke the hold. KUSHIDA delivered a flying arm drag to Atlas and then transitioned into an arm bar. Maverick appeared, placed his hand over Atlas as the referee counted 1,2,3.

WINNER: DRAKE MAVERICK (3-1)

After the match, El Hijo Del Fantasma came out and offered Maverick a handshake.

(Amin’s Analysis: A fun opening action packed match as there were some terrific sequences leading to the finish. I liked the finish as they protected KUSHIDA who was the star of the match but kept Maverick’s story continuing on.)

Tom Phillips hyped the Triple Threat NXT Women’s Championship Match between my favourite Io Shirai, Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley. My favourite Io Shirai will team with Rhea Ripley against Charlotte Flair and a mystery partner.

Backstage, Kurt Angle was going over the rules of the Fight Pit match with Timothy Thatcher.

Johnny Gargano came out with Candice LeRae. They were booed. Gargano told the NXT stars in the crowd they have a company work for because of him and said he’s making this place better. Gargano said there’s a few hands and wants to give people opportunity and do it by holding the first Johnny Gargano Invitational. Gargano called out Adrian Alanis to the ring.

JOHNNY GARGANO (w/Candice LeRae) ADRIAN ALANIS

Gargano offered Alanis a handshake and then gave him a sucker punch. Alanis charged but Gargano nailed him with a Superkick. Gargano applied the Gargano Escape as Alanis tapped.

WINNER: JOHNNY GARGANO

(Amin’s Analysis: A solid promo and showcase match for Gargano here as he and LeRae have both shined since turning heel.)

Keith Lee and Mia Yim were shown in their home as they mocked Gargano and LeRae’s dinner. Yim used a flashlight and mocked LeRae for not winning a title in NXT. Yim asked Lee to try using the flashlight. Lee used the flashlight and said Gargano was the same size of his action figure. Tegan Nox appeared and delivered pizza to Lee and Yim. Yim noted it’s not about the Gargano Way but making them pay.

(Amin’s Analysis: I enjoyed this as the lines were funny as both Lee and Yim were good spoofing The Gargano’s dinner segment.)

Drake Maverick was interviewed backstage, noting he felt bad for KUSHIDA because he got the tap before he scored the pin fall. KUSHIDA appeared and wished Maverick luck in his match. Maverick said he respects KUSHIDA and will give him the first title shot if he wins.

NXT Tag Team Champions Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner vignette. They explained the titles aren’t coming off their shoulders, then called both Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan a disgrace to their countries. They said the mat is sacred and then did Imperium’s pose.

SHOTZI BLACKHEART vs. RAQUEL GONZALEZ (w/Dakota Kai)

Gonzalez delivered a pair of shoulder tackles but Shotzi responded with a rolling forearm followed by a Question Mark Kick. Shotzi went for a running senton but Kai pulled Gonzalez out of the way. There was cute spot where Kai drove around in Shotzi’s tank. Nox came out and shoved Kai off the tank. Gonzalez took control planting Shotzi with a powerslam for a two count.

Shotzi fired up delivering a cannonball as Gonzalez rolled to the floor. There was a scary spot as Shotzi went for a flying back senton as she fell hard on the landing as Gonzalez and Kai couldn’t catch her in time. LeRae came out, got into a confrontation with Nox and then yanked Shotzi off the turnbuckle. Gonzalez followed as she planted Shotzi with a one-arm Powerbomb for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: RAQUEL GONZALEZ

(Amin’s Analysis: There was some clunkiness and the landing Shotzi took on the floor looked scary. I give Shotzi lots of credit as she brings a very unique style which stands out. Gonzalez was good her playing the powerhouse and will continue to get better overtime. Her pairing with Kai has clicked. Overall, a fine match.)

Highlight package hyping up Finn Balor vs. Damian Priest for NXT TakeOver: In Your House.

My favourite Io Shirai will team with Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte Flair and a mystery partner next on NXT.

IO SHIRAI & RHEA RIPLEY vs. CHARLOTTE FLAIR & CHELSEA GREEN (w/Robert Stone)

Ripley planted Green with reverse face buster as Shirai tagged in. Shirai hit a cartwheel dropkick and then crushed Green with a Slingshot Knees. Green avoided a Tiger Feint Kick and delivered a tope to Shirai. Shirai responded by delivering a tope to Green and followed with a crossbody. Ripley tagged in and delivered a face buster too Green.

Charlotte tagged in placed Ripley in a Figure-8-Leg Lock but Shirai made the save with a sliding double knees. Shirai connected with a running Hurricanrana and then crushed Charlotte with a double knees for a two count. Shirai delivered a double stomp to Charlotte and then connected with a Tiger Feint Kick.

Green shoved Charlotte as Shirai nailed her with a Springboard Missile Dropkick. Charlotte moved as Shirai accidentally knocked Ripley off the ring apron. Charlotte applied a rollup, placed her foot on the rope for leverage and got the 1,2,3. (Shirai’s facial reaction after the match was just incredible.)

WINNER: CHARLOTTE FLAIR & CHELSEA GREEN

(Amin’s Analysis: A good match that didn’t reach the next gear. Lots of good interaction between Shirai, Charlotte and Ripley headed into the Triple Threat Match. Now let me speak about the finish because I wrote about this in my NXT Primer for PWTorch. This wasn’t the right time for Shirai to take the pin in the match and her reaction were perfect as that’s how I felt. I will give NXT a pass and see how this plays out. Hopefully, this leads to my favourite Io Shirai coming back and wining the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: In Your House.)

Backstage, Gargano wasn’t pleased with Lee and accepted his challenge for NXT TakeOver: In Your House. LeRae challenged Yim to a match next week and then told Nox she should be ashamed of herself.

Tom Phillips brought up NXT Champion Adam Cole’s issue with Velveteen Dream and noted he requested an audience with William Regal. They had a Zoom call. Cole noted he’s the longest NXT Champion but his celebration was placed on hold. Regal asked Cole to get to his point. Cole noted he wanted Undisputed Era to get another shot at the NXT Tag Team Titles. Regal noted Dream is likely getting another title shot at NXT TakeOver: In Your House. Cole called Dream a narcissistic. Regal asked if Cole understood the art of negotiation and not to act like a Bay-Bay. Cole said that was Regal’s best line since he was a Real’s Man Man. (A great line.) Cole agreed Dream can have the match but if he losses he can’t get another match. Regal agreed and noted he would find a location that is fitting for the NXT Championship.

(Amin’s Analysis: The back-and-forth interaction between Cole and Regal was solid. I wondered if they would’ve added Dexter Lumis after last week’s post-match angle. But, they went with a championship rematch which is fine.)

Highlight package on Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan speaking about their time in NXT and meeting in a pub. They clinked glasses to taking the titles from Imperium.

TOMMASO CIAMPA vs. LEON RUFF

Scarlett came out and watched the match from ringside. Ciampa nailed Ruff with a pair of running knees. Ciampa planted Ruff with the Fairytale Ending for the 1,2,3.

WINNER: TOMMASO CIAMPA

Ciampa waved to Scarlett as she walked up the ramp. Karrion Kross appeared on the screen. Kross called Ciampa and his match at NXT TakeOver: In Your House special. Kross noted he will make Ciampa feel something he never felt before at TakeOver: In Your House. Tick. Tock.

(Amin’s Analysis: Ruff is a talented wrestler and was great here making Ciampa look great. Kross’s promo was great and Scarlett’s presence at ringside was simple but worked. I liked this build as it worked without any physical interaction.)

NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match: Drake Maverick vs. El Hijo Del Fantasma. Candice LeRae vs. Mai Yim. Prime TakeOver: Building up the NXT Championship and NXT Women’s Championship Match.

CAGE FIGHT: MATT RIDDLE vs. TIMOTHY THATCHER – SPECIAL GUEST REFEREE KURT ANGLE

This was a complete different style of cage as there was no ring canvas, no ropes and no turnbuckles. There was a platform on the top of the cage. Riddle nailed Thatcher with a Superman Forearm. Thatcher went for a Sleeper but Riddle ran off the cage to break free. Riddle planted Thatcher with a German Suplex and then hit a pair of BroTons. Riddle nailed Thatcher with a with a PK. Thatcher was bleeding from the mouth and lost some teeth. Doctor at ringside asked Thatcher if he can still fight.

Thatcher said yes. Riddle leaped off the cage but Thatcher countered into an arm bar.Thatcher send Riddle flying with an overhead suplex and then applied an STF. Thatcher stomped away at Riddle as Angle began his count. Riddle got up. Thatcher hit a Butterfly Suplex went for a Fujiwara Armbar but Riddle broke free. Thatcher went for a Triangle Armbar but Riddle broke free. They made their way on top of the cage as they exchanged strikes. Thatcher applied a knee bar on top of the cage but Riddle broke free.

Riddle went for the BroTon but Thatcher moved and hit a Butterfly Suplex. Riddle nailed Thatcher with a Final Flash Knee as he feel to the floor. There was an impressive spot as Riddle delivered the Floating Bro to Thatcher from top of the cage. Thatcher hopped on Riddle’s back and went for a sleeper. Riddle tried to break free by ramming Thatcher against the cage. Thatcher maintained control and placed Riddle in a Rear Naked Choke. Riddle passed out.

WINNER: TIMOTHY THATCHER

(Amin’s Analysis: This was terrific and was complete different style match you don’t see on Raw or SmackDown. This was built as an MMA fight with pro wrestling meshed in. Thatcher was just terrific here and he came off as a top player wanting to continue the match. Riddle is just terrific as he’s one of my favourite wrestler and his style is so enjoyable to watch. This was a great main event. Thumbs up.)

Overall ThoughtsThis was a solid episode of NXT as the wrestling was good. The main event was excellent and I liked the angles building up the main matches for NXT TakeOver: In Your House. The only upsetting part was seeing Io Shirai take the pin in the tag match. Like, I said above will wait and see how things play out. I want to see my favourite Io Shirai win and become the new NXT Women’s Champion at NXT TakeOver: In Your House.
