Amin’s WWE NXT Review: Io Shirai vs. Charlotte Flair for the NXT Women’s Title

WWE NXT opened with a video package previewing the NXT Women’s Championship Match between my favourite Io Shirai and Charlotte Flair. Video package also previewed the NXT Championship Match between Adam Cole and Velveteen Dream. Tom Phillips  called the action alongside Mauro Ranallo and Beth Phoenix.

Gargano came out to new music. Dijakovic took control early delivering a backbreaker and an overhead suplex for a pair of near falls. Candice LeRae came out as this gave Gargano the opportunity to send Dijakovic to the floor. Gargano connected with a tope.

They exchanged strikes as Dijakovic caught Gargano with a Cyclone Boot for a two count. Dijakovic went for Feast Your Eyes but Gargano countered with a Superkick for a two count. LeRae distracted the referee as Gargano went to expose the turnbuckle. Dijakovic planted Gargano with a Sit-Out Chokeslam for a two count.

Dijakovic called for Feast Your Eyes but Gargano grabbed hold of the turnbuckle. Gargano delivered a Hurricanrana sending Dijakovic into the exposed turnbuckle and then hit a Slingshot DDT for the 1,2,3.

(Amin’s Analysis: Dijakovic is a really talented wrestler and always puts on good matches. Gargano is a terrific wrestler and his heel turn has added another layer to his character. I like the finish to establish Gargano’s heel character. Overall, a solid match.)

We got a recap of Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel laying out Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher last week. Barthel noted Imperium are the most impressive team in all of NXT. Aichner called last week’s game show a joke and then challenged Riddle and Thatcher to a NXT Tag Team Championship Match.

My favourite Io Shirai was shown warming up for her NXT Women’s Championship Match.

Gallagher took early working delivering strikes and working over Tozawa’s fingers. Gallagher charged but Tozawa caught him with a Frankenstiner.

They battled for position as Tozawa planted Gallagher with a DDT on the ring apron. Tozawa connected with a flying Senton Bomb for the 1,2,3.

After the match, Tozawa said Fantasma is his next challenger. Tozawa mentioned he’s never seen or doesn’t know who Fantasma is but will beat him.

(Amin’s Analysis: Gallagher is such an underrated wrestler as his physical striking style looks so crisp. Tozawa’s a solid wrestler and it’s nice to see him get a chance to showcase his wrestling ability on NXT. Overall, a good match.)

They aired a video package of WWE superstars and other athletes teaming up and supporting the Front Line Workers.

XIA LI vs. CHELSEA GREEN (w/Robert Stone)

Xia took control early on in the match as she delivered strikes to Green in the corner. Aliyah who has been recently feuding with Xia came out.

Aliyah caused a distraction but Xia knocked her off the ring apron. Aliyah caused another distraction as Green delivered the Unprettier to Xia for the 1,2,3

(Amin’s Analysis: Wasn’t a fan of the match or the finish as it seems like the never-ending feud between Aliyah and Xia Li will continue on. I will say I’ve been impressed with Xia Li for the screen time’s she’s given as she makes the best of her oppertunity and her striking ability stands out.)

Velveteen Dream was chilling on a purple couch told Adam Cole his dream was over.

Goth medal played as the Kross entrance was full black and white, with Scarlet shouting out the words. They entered the ring as red lights and fog filled the ring.

Kross took control as he planted Ruff with a pair of Doomsday Saito Suplex. Kross then planted Ruff in the Kross Jacket for the submission win.

(Amin’s Analysis: This was tremendous as the entrance was loud, over-the-top but in an awesome way. A terrific showcase win for Kross and Ruff did a great job taking bumps. Overall, an excellent presentation for both Kross and Scarlett.)

Video package aired hyping up the NXT Women’s Championship Match between my favourite Io Shirai and Charlotte Flair.

Backstage, Matt Riddle said he knew they would have a target on their backs after winning the NXT Tag Team Titles. Riddle wasn’t pleased that Imperium ruined the Newly Bro Show last week. Riddle said he’s up to the challenge to defend the Tag Team Titles but noted it’s up to Thatcher. Thatcher told Riddle, you knock them out and he will tap them out. Thatcher accepted the match.

The match began with some chain wrestling. Charlotte went for a big boot but Shirai beautifully bridged up to escape. Shirai hit a cartwheel dropkick backing Charlotte into the corner. Charlotte slowed the match down in her favour by placing Shirai in a seated figure-four head lock. Shirai went for a Sunset Flip but Charlotte countered with a right hand. Shirai didn’t back down as she connected with strikes in the corner. Shirai nailed Charlotte with a Pele Kick and followed with a beautiful Springboard Dropkick.

Shirai charged but Charlotte countered with a back elbow. Charlotte went to climb the turnbuckle but Shirai nailed her with a jumping enzuigiri. Shirai sent Charlotte to the mat after connecting with a beautiful Super Frankenstiner for a two count. Shirai charged but Charlotte countered with a backbreaker. Charlotte went for a Moonsault but Shirai moved out of the way. Shirai nailed Charlotte with a Tiger Feint Kick and then crushed her with a running double knees for a close two count. Shirai climbed the turnbuckle, wanting to show Charlotte why she’s called the “Genius of the Sky.” Shirai went for her beautiful signature Moonsault but Charlotte got her knees up.

Charlotte hit a running boot but Shirai kicked out. Charlotte looked surprised but it’s going to take more than that to keep my favourite Io Shirai down. Charlotte went for a Powerbomb but Shirai countered with a Hurricanrana sending her into the turnbuckle. Shirai climbed the turnbuckle, went for her beautiful signature Moonsault to the floor but Charlotte moved out of the way. Charlotte grabbed a kendo stick and attacked Shirai as the referee called for the DQ.

(Amin’s Analysis: The match itself was excellent. I’ve met Charlotte Flair and told her I wanted to see her wrestle my favourite Io Shirai. I’ve got so many attached emotions and felling about the overall finish of the match. Here we go. I have respect for Charlotte as she’s a great wrestler and a very sweet person. My main point is Charlotte can help create a new superstar if my Io Shirai would’ve won the NXT Women’s Championship. I didn’t mind the finish (for now) as Io Shirai was presented as superstar in the match, as she hit some of her signature spots and did the win the match. Overall, a great match and a fine finish which I’m fine with for now.)

Charlotte went after Io Shirai’s injured leg which she recently recovered from. This is where Rhea Ripley appeared and attacked Charlotte. Ripley dropped Charlotte on the ring apron. Charlotte headed to the back. My favourite Io Shirai wouldn’t back down as she confronted Ripley after the match. Ripley kept telling Io to shut up

After the commercial break, Ripley said she lost to Charlotte at WrestleMania but is sick of her bow down crap. Ripley said she would like to see Charlotte do it again. My favourite Io Shirai appeared and started pushing Ripley away. Shirai and Ripley brawled but were separated by WWE officials.

(Amin’s Analysis: I liked the post-match angle for now as they’ve established Charlotte as a heel and puts Ripley back in the mix as well. Now let me get to the main point. The attack on Io Shirai after the match and Ripley in a rude way telling her to shut up was an interesting setup. My feeling this is a way to turn my favourite Io Shirai back into a babyface who will still keep the aggressive side to her character. I can see a Triple-Threat Match for the NXT Women’s Title where Io Shirai will win. Or, I can see Triple H saving the moment for Io Shirai to be the one to beat Charlotte Flair and become the new NXT Women’s Champion when fans are allowed to attend shows. I would love to attend the show and see my favourite Io Shirai become the new NXT Women’s Champion.)

NXT Champion Adam Cole was shown warming up backstage.

The match began with some chain wrestling. KUSHIDA took control after hitting a Somersault Bomb to Atlas on the floor. KUSHIDA hit a cartwheel dropkick and then nailed Atlas with a running shote in the corner.

Atlas hit a German Suplex and followed with a running enzuigiri for a two count. Atlas hit a tope sending KUSHIDA into the barricade. Atlas went for a Springboard but KUSHIDA countered into a flying cross arm-breaker for the submission win.

After the match, KUSHIDA said this match was a warning to all the Cruiserweight Champions in the past and he will be the next champion. KUSHIDA looked at wrist and said time will tell.

(Amin’s Analysis: A fast-paced solid match as Atlas looked good and has star potential in his. KUSHIDA is an excellent wrestler, so fun to watch and my pick to win the tournament. Solid post-match promo by KUSHIDA as well. This was very good for the time given.)

Finn Balor appeared at the podium and said he used to think the biggest snakes in the place were in the office, but now he’s not sure. Balor said the Playbook 101 is attack THE guy and then you get THE push. Balor said he’s patient man but warned and said to whoever attacked him, that push you were expecting, will be a squash.

(Amin’s Analysis: A very shoot style promo that’s I usually don’t like. However, this was good as Balor’s points were valid and could lead to a big program. I mentioned in my NXT Primer for PWTorch that Balor could be the one behind the attack. I’m still not ruling that out and leads to him getting a shot at the NXT Championship.)

Grimes went for the Cave In but Denzel moved. Denzel made his comeback as he sent Grimes flying with a pair of overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Grimes connected with the Cave In on the second attempt for the 1,2,3.

(Amin’s Analysis: A simple match to give Grimes who’s a talented wrestler a win.)

After the match, Grimes said he deserves better than this and told Balor to come after him. Grimes said he would stand right up to Balor first and slap the taste out of his mouth. This is where Balor appeared and stands next to Grimes. Balor dares Grimes to do it. Balor avoided a strike and delivered a double stomp to Grimes. Balor followed by hitting a Slingblade. Balor looked into the camera and said “There is a snake in the long grass and he is going to find it.  The best way to get rid of a snake is to chop off its head.”

(Amin’s Analysis: This was good as Balor has really shined and has been presented as a true superstar since returning back to NXT. Balor vs. Grimes should be a great match next week.)

NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Matt Riddle & Timothy Thatcher vs. Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel. Plus, Finn Balor vs. Cameron Grimes are the matches announced for next week on NXT.

Dream took control after ramming Cole into the ring steps. Dream charged but Cole countered with a pair of Superkicks. Cole went for the Last Shot but Dream countered with a Spinebuster for a two count. Cole went for a Super Panama Sunrise but Dream countered with a Dream DDT for a two count. Dream connected with a Superkick but Cole kicked out.

Dream leaped off the turnbuckle but Cole moved and hit a back cracker for a two count. Cole hit an Ushigroishi but Dream kicked out. Dream leaped off the turnbuckle but Cole caught him with a Superkick. Dream fell onto Cole for near fall. Bobby Fish and Roderick Strong came out but were stopped by Dexter Lumis who slithered from underneath the ring.

A brawl broke out as Lumis launched Strong into the referee. Dream hit a Purple Rainmaker, had the match won but the referee was out. Dream hit a Springboard Plancha onto Fish, Strong and Lumis on the floor. Dream leaped off the turnbuckle but Cole caught him with a Superkick. Cole nailed Dream with a Last Shot for the 1,2,3.

(Amin’s Analysis: A solid main event as Dream worked very hard and is a talented wrestler. Adam Cole is an excellent wrestler, a superstar and has been tremendous as NXT Champion. I liked the involvement of all the key players as the announcers brought up that it might have been Lumis who cost Dream his chance at the NXT Title. Overall, a solid main event.)

Overall Thoughts: A good episode of NXT as the highlights were the Io Shirai/Charlotte Flair and Adam Cole/Velveteen Dream matches. I also very much liked the presentation of Finn Balor, Karrion Kross and Scarlett on the show. I’ve gave my thoughts on the NXT Women’s Championship match. I will just say again, Io Shirai is my favourite and I want to see her win the NXT Women’s Championship and hopefully very soon.
