AMIN’S WWE WRESTLEMANIA NIGHT ONE REVIEW
SATURDAY APRIL 4, 2020
WWE PERFORMANCE CENTER IN ORLANDO, FL
–The show opened with Stephanie McMahon standing in a studio and said WrestleMania is always different year to year but tonight and tomorrow night’s WrestleMania broadcast would be most different of all. Stephanie noted there won’t be 80,000 screaming fans “due to current circumstances” Stephanie noted WrestleMania will emanate from a closed set and from other locations. Stephanie said their goal is to provide a diversion, to deliver a sense of hope, determination and perseverance and to entertain your families. Stephanie welcomed us to WrestleMania.
(Amin’s Analysis: This was nicely done by Stephanie welcoming us to the show. It’s such a bummer that wrestling fans couldn’t attend WrestleMania this year with the ongoing circumstances in the world. Hopefully, things get better soon and fans around the world attend wrestling show again.)
–A montage aired of past celebrities who sang American The Beautiful and the National Anthem at WrestleMania. Celebrities included Aretha Franklin, John Legend, Boys II Men, Ray Charles, Michelle Williams, Fantasia, Little Richard, Aloe Blacc, Gladys Knight, Nicole Scherzinger, Boys Choir of Harlem and Willie Nelson.
(Amin’s Analysis: I enjoyed this as it was really nicely done.)
–WrestleMania opening played based on a Pirate theme. After the video concluded, Rob Gronkowski was shown standing on a perch in the WWE Performance Center as he welcomed us to the show and said WrestleMania is too big for one night. Gronk said they picked the right person to host the show and asked Mojo Rawley to join him.
(Amin’s Analysis: Gronkowski was fine here as he looked be enjoying himself and his personality will fit in perfectly with WWE.)
WWE WOMEN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: THE KABUKI WARRIORS (ASUKA & KAIRI SANE) vs ALEXA BLISS & NIKKI CROSS
Kairi Sane came out as the Pirate Princess looking very cute. The Kabuki Warriors took control early as Sane delivered a head scissors to Nikki on the floor as Asuka followed with a Hook Kick. Sane placed Bliss in the Tree of Woe and delivered the Marine Spike to Bliss for a two count. Asuka delivered a knee lift but Bliss kicked out. Nikki eventually got tag as she delivered a flying crossbody to Sane for a two count. Nikki delivered a Swinging Neckbreaker to Asuka but Sane broke the count as he delivered her signature InSane Diving Elbow which looked beautiful. Asuka placed Nikki in the Asuka Lock but Bliss made the save as she connected with Twisted Bliss onto Asuka. Sane delivered an Interceptor to Bliss. Nikki avoided a spinning back fist as she delivered a Twisting Neckbreaker to Sane as Bliss followed as she delivered Twisted Bliss for the 1,2,3.
WINNERS: ALEXA BLISS & NIKKI CROSS WON THE WWE WOMEN TAG TEAM TITLES
(Amin’s Analysis: This was a fun match as Bliss and Nikki make a good team. Was disappointing to see Asuka and Kairi loss as they both two amazing wrestlers and have been great champions. It will be interesting to see where Asuka and Sane go from here. If WWE does a Superstar Shake-Up or a WWE Draft, I would like to see them go to NXT where they shined most.)
ELIAS vs. KING CORBIN
Corbin gloated about his attack on Elias from SmackDown and wanted a forfeit win. Elias came out as he whacked his guitar over Corbin’s back. Elias delivered a reverse DDT for a two count. Elias charged but Corbin caught him with a Deep Six for a two count. Corbin applied a rollup, placed his foot on the ropes but referee Jessica Carr caught him and stopped her count. Elias applied a rollup, grabbed a handful of tights for the win.
(Amin’s Analysis: It dragged at points but this was passable match as both Corbin and Elias worked hard.)
RAW WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: BECKY LYNCH vs. SHAYNA BASZLER
Becky was shown arriving the arena in a tractor-trailer. They exchanged hard strikes as the match began. Baszler went for a Powerbomb but Becky countered into a Hurricanrana. After exchanging big strikes, Becky got the better of a counter exchange as she planted Baszler with a Becky Bottom on the ring apron for a two count. Baszler made a comeback as she connected with a Butterfly Backbreaker and then transitioned into an arm bar but Becky broke free. Baszler delivered a sliding knee for a two count. Baszler placed Becky in the Kirifuda Clutch against the ropes. Baszler then swung Becky against the announcers table. They played off the finish where Kairi Sane won the NXT Women’s Title at TakeOver: Brooklyn 4 where Baszler went for the Kirfuda Clutch but Becky rolled through for the 1,2,3.
WINNER: BECKY LYNCH RETAINED THE RAW WOMEN’S TITLE
(Amin’s Analysis: The pacing was good as both Baszler and Becky worked a solid physical match.I didn’t mind the finish as they protected Baszler to possibly set up a rematch. They kept the title on Becky as she has now held the Raw Women’s Title for a full year. I get Becky’s the face of the company but at some point she should lose the title because she’s gaining nothing by beating everyone and it’s just dropping everyone else status.)
WWE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: SAMI ZAYN (w/Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro) vs. DANIEL BRYAN (w/Drew Gulak)
Zayn stalled forever on the floor as the match already began to drag and got tiring at a point. Bryan kept chasing Zayn but was stopped by Cesaro and Nakamura. Gulak delivered a flying shoulder tackle to both Cesaro and Nakamura. The match finally began as Bryan delivered strikes, a tope and followed with a missile dropkick. Bryan slapped Zayn across the face and followed with a running dropkick. Cesaro and Nakamura returned as they rammed Gulak into the ring post. Bryan leaped off the turnbuckle but Zayn caught him with a Helluva Kick for the 1,2,3.
WINNER: SAMI ZAYN RETAINED THE WWE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE
(Amin’s Analysis: I had high expectations for this as both Bryan and Zayn are tremendous wrestlers and should’ve had a great match. That wasn’t the plan here as they wanted to make Bryan look good but have Zayn retain the title. This match underdelivered to no fault of any of the wrestlers involved in the match.)
TRIPLE THREAT LADDER MATCH FOR THE SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM TITLES: JOHN MORRISON vs. KOFI KINGSTON vs. JIMMY USO
The fireworks stared early as Kofi delivered a flying crossbody off a ladder to Jimmy. Morrison stood on the ring post and delivered a Corkscrew Splash to Jimmy onto a ladder. There was a cool spot as Kofi delivered a Springboard Hurricanrana pulling Morrison off a ladder. Jimmy ran off the barricade but Kofi responded by throwing a ladder into him. The most crazy spot of the match came when Morrison walked the ropes and connected with an Avalanche Spanish Fly to Kofi. Jimmy followed by delivering an Uso Splash to Morrison. Kofi leaped off the ladder and delivered the Cave In to Morrison. Everyone climbed the ladder looking to grab the titles. The finish was creative as Kofi and Jimmy delivered stereo head butts to Morrison who fell off the ladder with the titles in his possession for the win.
WINNER: JOHN MORRISON RETAINED THE SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM TITLES
(Amin’s Analysis: This was the best match on the show unto this point as Jimmy, Kofi and Morrison are three very talented wrestlers as they worked really hard and came up with some very some innovative spots as everyone looked great.)
KEVIN OWENS vs. SETH ROLLINS
The first big spot came early Rollins blocked a Powerbomb and delivered a Falcon Arrow to Owens on the ring apron. Rollins was in control from this point as he delivered a pair of topes and then connected with a Slingblade to Owens. There was a nice sequence as Owens avoided a pair of Curb Stomps and planted Rollins with a DDT. Owens made a comeback as he delivered a Cannonball into the turnbuckle and followed with a Swanton Bomb but Rollins kicked out. Rollins blocked a Superplex and delivered a Buckle Bomb. Rollins went for a Curb Stomp but Owens countered with a Popup Powerbomb for a two count. The action moved to the floor as Rollins nailed Owens with a ring bell. Rollins told the timekeeper to ring the bell as the referee called for the DQ.
WINNER: KEVIN OWENS VIA DQ
Rollins walked up the ramp and started smiling. Owens cut a promo calling out Rollins actions and challenged him to a No DQ match. Rollins accepted the match as delivered a rising knee to Owens. Rollins whacked Owens with a chair and the ring steps. Rollins talked smack but Owens responded as he nailed him with a ring bell. There was an awesome spot as Owens climbed up the WrestleMania sign and delivered a flying elbow sending Rollins crashing through the announcers table. Owens followed by delivering a Stunner for the 1,2,3.
WINNER: KEVIN OWENS
(Amin’s Analysis: The first part of the match was very good but ended on a lame note with the DQ finish. Was nice to see them continue to the match as Owens and Rollins are two of the most talented wrestlers in WWE and they proved it as they had a great match at WrestleMania.)
WWE UNIVERSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: GOLDBERG vs. BRAUN STROWMAN
Goldberg avoided a Running Powerslam and delivered a three straight spears but Strowman kicked out. Goldberg delivered another spear, went for the Jackhammer but Strowman countered as he delivered a pair of powerslams. Strowman delivered a Running Powerbomb to Goldberg for the 1,2,3.
WINNER: BRAUN STROWMAN WON THE WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE
(Amin’s Analysis: The length was perfect as the match revolved around Goldberg and Strowman delivered high-impact moves. Let me say, I don’t mind seeing Goldberg wrestle from time to time, I just don’t want to see him as champion. I would’ve liked if WWE gave a reason for Strowman being Roman Reigns replacement. This was nice moment for Strowman as puts on entertaining matches.)
BONEYARD MATCH: A.J. STYLES vs. THE UNDERTAKER
This match took place at a cemetery. A hearse pulled up with The Undertaker’s theme playing as some druids pulled out a coffin as Styles was shown inside mocking Undertaker. Styles called out The Undertaker who returned in his biker gimmick. The Undertaker took control early after he tossed Styles onto a windshield and then shoved him into the grave. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows were shown standing next to a wooden house as they called The Undertaker out. Taker approached them but was then surrounded by druids. He took out Anderson, Gallows and all the druids, which gave Styles enough time to appear and smash Undertaker with an actual tombstone and then tackled him through the wooden structure. Styles nailed The Undertaker with a shovel as he fell into the grave. Styles climbed into a forklift and was going to bury him. Suddenly, The Undertaker appeared behind Styles and attacked him. Styles was chased near the cabin as he ran up a ladder. The Undertaker raised his arms as explosions blew. The Undertaker then tossed Gallows off the roof before delivering a Tombstone to Anderson on the roof. Undertaker grabbed Styles and Chokeslammed him off the roof onto a wooden pallet on the floor. Styles apologized and asked not to bury him. Undertaker appreciated Styles for putting up a great fight and hugged him. Undertaker was about to walkaway but then turned around and booted Styles into the grave. He dumped dirt into the grave and won the match. This was awesome as they showed a visual of Styles glove sticking out of the dirt. The Undertaker drove off on his motorcycle as his symbol was blazed on the cabin.
WINNER: THE UNDERTAKER
(Amin’s Analysis: This was shot like a horror movie and brought a whole different feel to the show. This match ruled as both Styles and Undertaker were excellent here. The visual effect and the way this was done just fantastic. Thumbs up, WWE.)
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Night one of WrestleMania was very fun to watch and I give all the WWE wrestlers credit as they worked very hard to put on a show for the WWE fans. Overall, a thumbs up show.
