Jon Moxley is in action. The show kicked out with round one of the AEW World Tag Team Championship Tournament between Private Party and The Young Bucks.
[Amin’s Analysis] I like how the show opened with the announcers previewing tonight’s match and I also kicked how the show kicked off with a hot tag team match.
Round One of the AEW Tag Team Championship Tournament: Private Party (Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen) vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) – The crowd was super hot for this match as Nick delivered a neck breaker to Kassidy as Matt followed with a Slingshot senton. There was a great spot as Quen delivered a pair of topes and followed with a pair of Tope Con Hilo to The Bucks on opposite sides of the ring. Quen delivered a 450 Splash but Matt kicked out. The Bucks welcomed Quen to the Superkick Party. Matt delivered a Running Powerbomb to Kassidy on the entrance ramp. The Bucks delivered a Combo Sliced Bread/Powerbomb to Quen for a near fall. Quen applied a Victory Roll, pinned Matt and got the win.
- WINNERS: Private Party advance in AEW Tag Team Championship Tournament
[Amin’s Analysis] This was a terrific way to kick off the AEW Tag Team Championship Tournament as this match delivered more than enough bang for your buck. The Young Bucks are are one of the best tag teams in the world and Private Party did a great job matching them move for move. I liked the element of surprise and going with a new fan favourite team picking up an upset win against a heavy favourite.
–AEW World Champion Chris Jericho came out to a big reaction with Jake Hager, Ortiz, Santana and Sammy Guevara. Jericho introduced himself as the Champion of AEW. Jericho noted AEW had the highest rated premiere on TNT and was because of him. The fans chanted “Thank You, Jericho.” Jericho told the fans to shut their mouths and sit down. Jericho said after last week they are next and they are now (Subtle dig at NXT if you get the reference.) Jericho said Guevara “looks like a Spanish God“ and said “He’s on my list.” (Reference to the List of Jericho gimmick in WWE.) When speaking about Ortiz and Santana, Jericho said “They’re street fighter back ally brutes and I like it,” that’s why they are on the list. Jericho said the giant behind him is Jake Hager a former World Champion (Reference to Jack Swagger’s forgettable run as WWE World Champion) Jericho noted Hager is the roughest, most terrifying crazy MMA fighter in the world today. The fans chanted “We The People.” (Hey AEW fans, wrong promotion.) Jericho immediately shut the fans downs as he told them to stop. Jericho said “We the People’ sucks and it’s dead and buried. “It was a stupid idea from bad creative, and all that’s gone.” (A funny yet direct shot at WWE and especially the creative team.) The fans erupted and chanted “AEW.” Jericho said Hager is undefeated “and that’s a shoot.” Jericho noted his crew will now be called The Inner Circle and noted we’re in control of AEW. Jericho called Cody a “stupid son of a B—-.” Jericho said he doesn’t Cody’s or his family. He called Dusty Rhodes a jerk as the fans loudly booed this. Jericho noted he doesn’t like Dustin either and will beat up Cody at the Full Gear PPV. Jericho noted The Inner Circle are going to walk the streets of Baltimore and have a little bit of the bubbly in celebration. Loud pop from the fans. Jericho ended by saying “We’re the Inner Circle. And you’re welcome.”
[Amin’s Analysis] This was awesome as Jericho did an incredible job cutting one the best promos in his legendary career. He took digs at WWE while putting over his new stable in AEW which was great. I don’t mind the inside reference as from time-to-time it’s fine. But, I don’t want to see it occur on a regular basis. I will also say this is where AEW will shine as they give their superstars chances to cut unscripted promo. Most WWE promos are scripted and sound pretty generic especially on the main roster.
Number One Contenders Match: Darby Allin vs. Jimmy Havoc – Darby delivered a springboard arm drag and followed with a Woo Dropkick sending Havoc into the turnbuckle. Havoc bit on Darby’s fingers. They battled on the ring apron as Havoc delivered a Falcon Arrow sending Darby to the floor. Havoc delivered a Sleeper Suplex and followed with a Rolling Elbow for a near fall. Havoc delivered a running Death Valley Driver sending Darby into the turnbuckle for a near fall. Havoc delivered a Butterfly Piledriver but Darby grabbed the ropes. Havoc went for the Acid Rainmaker but Darby bit on his arm. Darby delivered a Sit-Out Stunner and followed with a Coffin Drop for the win.
- WINNER: Darby Allin
[Amin’s Analysis] This was a solid match as both Darby and Havoc worked hard. This was interesting in building up contender for the AEW World Title as Havoc took most of the match but Darby won in the end. They tried to tell a story and the announcers pushed it as Darby can withstand pain but can still prevail in his matches.
–The announced mentioned Darby will challenge Jericho for the AEW World Title next week.
AEW Women’s World Champion Riho & Dr. Brit Baker vs. Bea Priestley & Emi Sakura – Riho went for a running crossbody but Sakura caught and slammed her to the mat. [Post Match] Baker and Priestley exchanged strikes after the match as they had to be pulled apart. Priestley left the ring as Baker and Riho celebrated.
- WINNERS: Dr. Brit Baker & Riho via Submission
[Amin’s Analysis] This was a fine match as everyone worked hard. I liked the ongoing interaction between Baker and Bea as they are building to a match.
–The announcers mentioned that Riho will defend the AEW World Women’s Title against Dr. Brit Baker next week.
–A vignette of the Best Friends aired of them hugging in the middle of a grass field. The camera cut to the arena as Chuck Taylor and Trent Baretta were shown at ringside. Jen Sturger asked Best Friends about their feeling heading into the AEW World Tag Team Tournament. Taylor said asked this guy. The camera panned as Orange Cassidy was shown in the crowd as he got a big reaction. Cassidy gave the thumbs up. The lights went out as Shawn Spears was shown seated on a chair.
Jon Moxley vs. Shawn Spears (w/Tully Blanchard) – PAC joined the commentary team. Moxley came out to an enormous reaction and felt like a mega star. Moxley delivered a PK as the fans chanted “Let’s go Moxley.” Moxley rammed Spears into the guardrail and then leaped off the ring apron and delivered a flying forearm. Spears caused a distraction as Tully rammed Moxley into the ring steps. Spears delivered a running Death Valley Driver sending Moxley into the guardrails. Spears delivered a Sit-Out Powerbomb for a near fall. Spears applied a Half Crab but Moxley broke free. Spears delivered a tope but Moxley brushed it off and delivered a tope. Moxley delivered a Regal Knee but Spears kicked out. Spears delivered a Pump Kick but Moxley responded with a lariat. Spears delivered an Ushigorishi for a near fall. Spears did his “10 Pose“ as Moxley responded with a head butt. Moxley delivered the Death Ryder (Elevated Dirty Deeds DDT) for the win.
[Post Match] Kenny Omega came out with a bared-wire bat and bared-wire broom as Moxley walked up the ramp. Omega tossed Moxley the bared-wire bat. The fans chanted “Holy S—.” PAC appeared from behind and rammed a chair into Omega’s head. Moxley teased attacking Omega but stopped and headed to the back. Moxley is jolly fellow.
- WINNER: Jon Moxley
[Amin’s Analysis] I would’ve preferred to see Moxley just run over any opponent in his first match on AEW Dynamite and would’ve have him cut a promo before or after the match. This was a fine TV match as both Moxley and Spears worked hard. The post-match angle was good as they building up Moxley and Omega for Full Gear. The PAC involvement was interesting as that could be Moxley’s next program after Omega.
AEW World Champion Chris Jericho (w/Jake Hager) & Sammy Guevara vs. Dustin Rhodes & Hangman Page – Dustin rammed Jericho into the ring post. Page delivered a Fallaway Slam to Guevara and a plancha to Jericho. Page delivered a Wheelbarrow Slam to Guevara for a near fall. Page delivered a running Shooting Star Press to Guevara but Jericho made the save. Jericho grabbed Page’s leg as Guevara dropped him on the top turnbuckle. Jericho went for a Lionsault but Page got his knees up. Page delivered a Discus Lariat to Guevara. Dustin delivered a reverse crossbody to Guevara and Jericho which got a big reaction. Page delivered a top rope moonsault to Guevara on the floor. With the referee distracted Hager delivered a lariat to Page on the floor. Dustin was setting up for the Shattered Dreams but Hager entered the ring and delivered a clubbing blow. Jericho delivered the Judas Effect to Dustin for the win.
[Post Match] Jericho attacked Dustin but Page made the save. Hager delivered a lariat sending Page to the floor. Page threw a chair into Hager’s face. The light went out as Cody appeared inside the ring to a big reaction. Cody delivered Cross Rhodes to Guevara. Cody and Jericho teased a confrontation but Ortis and Santana ran down and attacked Cody. MJF ran down with a chair in hand. MJF teased attacking Cody but instead attacked Otis and Santana with a chair. Jericho delivered a Codebreaker to MJF. Young Bucks ran down and welcomed Ortis and Santana to the Superkick Party. Jericho left the ring and posed the AEW World Title. Darby skated down the entrance ramp (on his skateboard) which got a big reaction. Darby attacked Jericho with his skateboard as the fans chanted “AEW.” Jericho cut a promo noting those stupid idiots don’t know what they’re dealing with. He called Cody a B—- as the show came to a close.
- WINNERS: Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara
[Amin’s Analysis] This was a fun main event as everyone looked good and got a chance to shine. I like how Jericho won as AEW is making the Champion fell like the featured star. The post-match angle was crazy as they’re were multiple things going on but it worked as totally engaged the crowd. It was well done as it set up matches for upcoming AEW Dynamite episodes and possible matches for the Full Gear PPV.
[Overall Thoughts] The opening tag match between Private Party and Young Bucks set the tone for the evening. Jericho’s promo was terrific and then main event angle was effectively done. I also enjoyed the very brief interaction between Moxley and Omega. Overall, another exciting episode of AEW Dynamite as it was fun to watch and the show feels fresh.
