Show: WWE NXT
Location: Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida
Date: Wednesday July 10, 2019
[The Big Takeaway] Io Shirai has turned to the dark side as she addressed her actions towards Candice LeRae. Jordan Myles advanced in the NXT Breakout Tournament and looks like the Street Profit have some new challengers in line for the NXT Tag Team Titles.
–My favourite wrestler Io Shirai came out to open the show. Shirai was wearing all black, she had a new theme song and had a flashing spotlight. (This was awesome) They aired a recap of Shirai attacking Candice LeRae after her Steel Cage NXT Women’s Championship match. Shirai stood inside the ring as the crowd booed. Shirai grabbed the mic and said “I don’t need any friends,” and then told the fans “I don’t need any of you.” Shirai dropped the mic and left the ring as she fully turned heel and it’s AWESOME!!!!
(Amin’s Analysis: This was terrific and the highlight of the show as Io Shirai was awesome here. She welcomed the heel reaction and did a great job playing off it. Looking forward to seeing where this leads and hoping to see my favourite wrestler Io Shirai in action at NXT TakeOver: Toronto)
–Backstage, Velveteen Dream was shown standing behind a podium with his NXT North American title displayed. Dream was asked about Roderick Strong. Dream told Queen Cathy to calm down. Dream noted Strong got lucky a couple weeks ago but doesn’t deserve a chance at the NXT North American title.
Blanco Loco vs. Damien Priest – Priest delivered a high kick to Loco and then delivered a release Falcon Arrow. Priest delivered a Cyclone Kick and then delivered the a Rolling Cutter for the win.
- WINNER: Damien Priest
(Amin’s Analysis: Another good showcase match for Priest as they are positioning him as a top star on NXT)
–They aired a video package hyping up Killian Dain’s return to NXT.
Round One of NXT Breakout Tournament: Boa vs. Jordan Myles – The match began with some chain wrestling. Myles delivered a cartwheel into a dropkick. Boa delivered a PK and followed with an axe kick for a near fall. Boa delivered a butterfly suplex for a near fall. Myles delivered rapid fire kicks in the corner. Myles delivered a running clothesline and followed with a 450 Splash for the win.
- WINNER: Jordan Myles
(Amin’s Analysis: This felt more of a showcase match for Myles who has an exciting style. Boa worked hard and will continue to get better in-ring)
–NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler was shown backstage and wasn’t impressed by Mia Yim’s backstory. Baszler noted whoever steps in the ring with her the story remains the same “Tap. Nap. Snap.”
–They aired a video package on Keith Lee and noted he’s been in NXT for nearly a year. Lee mentioned that everyone will bask in his glory but noted this isn’t the level he wants to be at and they’re going to be changes in year two. Lee noted limitless is not the way to go and will be the one to prove he’s infinite.
–William Regal was shown walking outside Full Sail University and noted that Kassius Ohno and Drew Gulak have challenged KUSHIDA. Regal noted next week KUSHIDA will face SmackDown Live superstar Apollo Crews.
NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Street Profit (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) vs. Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan – Dawkins applied a gator roll. Dawkins and Ford delivered a double flapjack sending Lorcan onto Burch. Burch and Lorcan delivered a double Russian leg sweep to Dawkins for a near fall. Burch and Lorcan delivered a double suplex for a near fall. Burch placed Dawkins in a Crossface but Ford made the save. Dawkins avoided a missile dropkick as Ford tagged in and delivered clotheslines to Burch and Lorcan. Ford delivered a standing moonsault to Lorcan for near fall. Dawkins and Ford delivered an assisted Sliced Bread but Lorcan kicked out. Burch delivered a Woo dropkick to Ford. Lorcan delivered a half-and-half suplex to Ford as Burch followed with a straight knee for a near fall. Ford delivered a flip dive to Burch on the floor. Lorcan went for a tope but Dawkins stopped him with a forearm. Dawkins delivered a Spinebuster to Lorcan as Ford followed with a Frog Splash for the win.
[Post Match] Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly appeared on the entrance ramp and applauded the Street Profit’s victory.
- WINNER: Street Profit retained the NXT Tag Team Titles
(Amin’s Analysis: This was a fun match as everyone worked hard with the peak coming at end with the close finishes. Liked seeing Fish and O’Reilly come out as they should get the next chance at the NXT Tag Team Titles because they are the best tag team wrestlers in NXT if not all of WWE)
[Overall] This was a good episode of NXT as the highlight was Io Shirai debuting her heel character. Looking forward to see where this leads and hopefully this leads to Io Shirai wrestling at NXT TakeOver: Toronto.
