NJPW Wrestling Dontaku Review: Kazuchika Okada vs. SANADA

Shota Umino & Ren Narita def. Yota Tsuji & Yuya Uemura – Umino applied a Boston Crab but Uemura grabbed the ropes. Uemura delivered a dropkick to Narita. Tsuji and Uemura excahged forearm strikes. Tsuji delivered a dropkick. Uemura delivered a running dropkick as Tsuji delivered a backdrop for a near fall. Umino delivered a dropkick to Tsuji. Umino delivered a missile dropkick and then delivered a Fisherman’s Suplex to Tsuji for the win. ⭐️⭐️

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a good opening tag team wrestling match)

Taichi, Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado, TAKA Michinoku & Yoshinobu Kanemaru def. Toa Henare, Jebb Cobb, Ryusuke Taguchi, Tiger Mask & YOSHI-HASHI – We got a comedy segment with Taguchi directing traffic. Suzuki whacked YOSHI with a chair. YOSHI blocked a PK and delivered a spin kick too Suzuki. Cobb delivered a Samoan drop and a standing moonsault to Taichi but Desperado made the save. Cobb delivered a stereo back suplex to both Desperado and Kanemaru. Henare delivered a suplex to Taichi for a near fall. Suzuki applied a sleeper as Taichi delivered a Buzzsaw Kick to Henare but everyone made the save. Cobb delivered Tour of the Islands to TAKA. Henare delivered a spine buster to Taichi for a near fall. Taichi delivered a backdrop suplex and then delivered a Superkick to Henare for the win. ⭐️⭐️

(Amin’s Analysis: A fine tag team wrestling match

Toru Yano, Togi Makabe & Jushin Liger def. Jado, Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa Jado hugged Liger and then held his hand up but Tonga attacked him from behind. Tonga delivered shoulder tackles. Makabe delivered a running clothesline to Loa and Tonga in opposite corners. Loa delivered a powerslam to Makabe. Yano did his usual comedy routine. Loa delivered a back suplex to Yano for a near fall. Jado applied a crossface but Liger made the save. Jado grabbed a kendo stick but Makabe stopped him. Yano delivered a low blow to Jado, rolled him up and got the win. ⭐️ 2/4

(Amin’s Analysis: Always fun to see Liger wrestler but this was just a basic match)

Juice Robinson, Hirooki Goto, Mikey Nicholls & Tomoaki Honma def. Hikuleo, Bad Luck Fale, Chase Owens & Jay White (w/Gedo) – Hikuleo delivered chops to Honma. White applied a chin lock but Honma responded by delivering a shoulder tackle. Goto suplex White onto Owens. Goto delivered a Saito suplex to White for a near fall. White delivered a Saito suplex to Goto. Goto delivered a running clothesline to Hikuelo. Juice delivered a cannonball to Hikuelo. Juice and Mikey delivered a double suplex to Hikuelo. Fale delivered a double clothesline to Juice and Mikey. White delivered a spinning suplex, Owens delivered a sliding knee as Hikuelo delivered a leg drop to Juice but Honma made the save. Goto delivered the Ushigorishi to Owens as Honma delivered the Kokeshi. Juice delivered a DDT and followed with a running clothesline. Juice delivered a jab and then delivered the Pulp Fiction to Hikuelo for the win. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

(Amin’s Analysis: A good tag team match as everyone worked hard

El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori def. Will Ospreay & Dragon Lee  “X” was revealed as El Phantasmo. Ospreay with a monkey flip to Phantasmo. Ospreay with a hurricanrana but Phantasmo landed on his feet and delivered a dropkick. Phantasmo walked the ropes and delivered a springboard head scissors to Ospreay for a near fall. Ospreay delivered a springboard kick to Ishimori. Lee and Ishimori exchanged strikes. Lee delivered a German suplex to Phantasmo. Ospreay delivered a running dropkick to Phantasmo into the turnbuckle and then delivered a springboard Phenomenal Forearm for a near fall. Ospreay delivered a inverted Stunner to Phantasmo. Ishimori delivered a plancha to Ospreay on the floor. There was a great spot as Phantasmo walked the ropes and delivered a reverse moonsault to Lee and Ospreay on the floor. Ishimori delivered a Codebreaker as Phantasmo followed by delivering a reverse moonsault but Lee made the save. Ospreay delivered a Spanish Fly to Phantasmo for a near fall. Ospreay delivered the Robinson Special. Ospreay went for the OzCutter but Phantasmo countered by delivering a Superkick. Phantasmo delivered a spinning neck breaker and then delivered a Butterfly Gourdbuster for the win. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/4

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a terrific match as everyone worked hard. A great showcase for Phantasmo as he looked awesome and was positioned as a superstar

Tetsuya Naito, BUSHI & Shingo Takagi def. SHO, YOH & Kota Ibushi – Ibushi and Naito were evenly matched as they worked at a really past pace. BUSHI and YOH exchanged palm strikes. YOH delivered a combination backbreaker/neck breaker to BUSHI. SHO and YOH delivered a stereo dropkick to Naito. Shingo delivered a running clothesline as BUSHI delivered a step-up enzuigiri. Naito delivered a sliding dropkick to SHO into the turnbuckle. Shingo delivered a reverse back elbow to SHO for a near fall. Shingo and SHO exchanged forearm strikes. SHO delivered a spear to BUSHI and a suplex to Shingo. Ibushi delivered a springboard dropkick to Shingo. Ibushi delivered a plancha to Naito and Ibushi on the floor. Shingo delivered a Popup DVD to Ibushi. Naito delivered a neck breaker and top rope Frankenstiner to Ibushi. Naito delivered a Claymore Kick to Ibushi for a near fall. Naito delivered Gloria but Ibushi kicked out. Naito delivered an enzuigiri but Ibushi responded by delivering a lariat. YOH delivered a corkscrew elbow to Naito. YOH countered a tornado DDT and delivered a Falcon Arrow to Naito for a near fall. SHO delivered a Superkick, went for a Dragon Suplex but Naito blocked as Shingo entered the ring and delivered a Pumping Bomber to SHO. BUSHI delivered a sunset flip as Naito delivered a sliding dropkick. BUSHI delivered a tope to Ibushi. Naito delivered the Destino to SHO for the win. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 2/4

After the match Naito challenged Ibushi to an IWGP Intercontinental Title match at NJPW Dominion. Ibushi accepted the match. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a really good match as everyone worked really hard and are great wrestlers

Hiroshi Tanahashi came out to a very good reaction and noted he lost to Okada at last year’s NJPW Dontaku’s show. Tanahashi noted he’s coming off elbow injury and couldn’t wrestle on the tour. Tanahashi mentioned he won the G1 last year and then won the IWGP Heavyweight Title at Wrestle Kingdom. Tanahashi noted he lost his momentum since but confirmed he will return on June 5 at the Best of the Super Juniors Finals show and will look to reclaim the IWGP Heavyweight Title. Jay White came out and noted the line for the IWGP Heavyweight Title starts behind him. Gedo caused a distraction as White attacked Tanahashi. White was about to attack Tanahashi’s arm with a chair but stopped. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a good angle as it sets up a Tanahashi and White match for NJPW Dominion

Tomohiro Ishii def. EVIL  EVIL and Ishii exchanged forearm strikes as the match began. EVIL rammed Ishii into the barricade and the ring post. EVIL worked over Ishii’s knee. Ishii delivered chops and forearm strikes in the corner. They battled on the turnbuckle as Ishii delivered a head butt and then delivered a tope rope Superplex for a near fall. EVIL suplex Ishii into the turnbuckle. EVIL placed Ishii on the barricade and delivered a twisting suplex on the floor. EVIL wrapped Ishii with a chair and then whacked him with another chair. EVIL delivered a top rope Superplex but Ishii kicked out. EVIL applied the Sharpshooter but Ishii grabbed the ropes. Ishii delivered a backdrop suplex. Ishii delivered a lariat and then applied a Sharpshooter but EVIL grabbed the ropes. Ishii delivered strikes and a sliding lariat but EVIL kicked out. EVIL delivered a German suplex and a lariat to Ishii. EVIL delivered a running clothesline for a near fall. Ishii delivered a German suplex and a lariat but EVIL kicked out at one. EVIL and Ishii exchanged clothesline. Ishii delivered back-to-back head butt but EVIL responded by delivering a half-and-half suplex. EVIL delivered a rolling elbow but Ishii countered by delivering a step-up enzuigiri and then delivered a running clothesline for a near fall. Ishii delivered a Vertical Drop Brainbuster for the win. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/4

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a terrific match as both EVIL and Ishii are terrific wrestlers and worked really hard as there were some great transitions and the finishing sequence was well done)

Kazuchika Okada def. SANADA to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Title – This match was going long as it started at a very slow pace beginning with some mat wrestling. Okada delivered a Shining Wizard. Okada delivered a Slingshot Senton for a near fall. Okada applied a long chin lock but SANADA broke free and delivered a low dropkick. SANADA delivered a low dropkick, a dragon screw and then placed Okada in the Paradise Lock. SANADA applied a headlock but Okada placed his foot on the rope. SANADA delivered a snap suplex for a near fall. Okada avoided a standing moonsault and delivered a rolling elbow. Okada delivered a back elbow and a DDT for a near fall. Okada delivered a running boot sending SANADA over the barricade. Okada delivered a running crossbody over to barricade to SANADA on the floor. Okada delivered a scoop slam but SANADA responded by delivering a dropkick and a plancha on the floor. Okada avoided the Skull End and delivered a flapjack. SANADA delivered a springboard dropkick. Okada delivered a running shoulder breaker and a flying elbow drop. Okada did his “Rainmaker” pose. Okada and SANADA exchanged pinning combinations for near fall. Okada applied a Cobra Clutch but SANADA broke free by delivering a dropkick. Okada responded by delivering a dropkick. Okada avoided the Skull End and delivered a Tombstone to SANADA. SANADA countered the Rainmaker and placed Okada in a variation of the Skull End. SANADA draped Okada in the top rope and delivered a twisting suplex. SANADA delivered a Tiger Suplex but Okada kicked out. SANADA avoided a Woo Dropkick but Okada caught him with a Spinning Rainmaker. Okada went for the Rainmaker but SANADA countered by variation of the Skull End. SANADA spun Okada around and then applied a full Skull End. Okada seemed to pass out as SANADA released the Skull End. SANADA delivered a moonsault, went for a second moonsault but Okada got his knees up. Okada and SANADA exchanged forearm strikes. SANADA delivered back-European uppercuts but Okada responded delivering a Woo Dropkick. Okada and SANADA blocked each other’s Tombstone attempts. SANADA avoided a Rainmaker and delivered a Rainmaker of his own but Okada kicked out for a great near fall. Okada caught SANADA running off the ropes and delivered a Spinning Tombstone. Okada delivered a Rainmaker for the win. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/4

Okada offered a handshake but SANADA didn’t shake his hand. Instead, Okada and SANADA bumped fist. Okada called SANADA his rival. Okada mentioned he will do his best to make sure everyone loves professional wrestling. Okada mentioned he’s the 69th IWGP Heavyweight Champion and was about to make it rain but the lights went out. A video played of Chris Jericho putting make up on his face which got a big reaction. Jericho challenged Okada at NJPW Dominion for the IWGP Heavyweight Title. Jericho said “I’m going to win.” Okada responded by saying let’s do it and said “I’m going to win.” Okada did his Rainmaker pose. (Looking forward to see this match as both Jericho and Okada are awesome wrestlers)

(Amin’s Analysis: It started really slow but this turned into a terrifc match as both Okada and SANADA worked really hard. There were some great counters and the finish was well done. SANADA is a great wrestler and Okada is just amazing to watch)
