WWE Starrcade Review: A.J. Styles vs. Samoa Joe

Bayley, Dana Brooke, Ember Moon & Sasha Banks def. Alicia Fox, Mickie James, Nia Jax & Tamina via Submission

  • Rating: ⭐️⭐️ 2/4

Moon delivered a springboard crossbody to James for a near fall. Brooke and Moon delivered a double team suplex to James for a near fall. Brook delivered a handspring back elbow, a scoop slam and followed up with a cartwheel splash for a near fall. Bayley delivered strikes to Tamina and followed up with a running high knee into the turnbuckle. Jax and Tamina delivered a double team shoulder tackle to Bayley. Fox applied a chin lock on Bayley. Jax tagged in, teased a punch but instead applied a chin lock on Bayley. Banks got the hot tag and delivered back-to-back running double knees to Fox into the turnbuckle but Tamina broke the count. Moon delivered the Eclipse to Tamina. James delivered a leaping senton from the top turnbuckle to Moon. Brooke delivered a flying crossbody to James. Jax missed a running splash in the corner as Bayley delivered a flying elbow drop to Jax. Finish of the match came when Banks countered an inside cradle applied the Bank Statement as Fox tapped out. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was fine opening match as everyone did good and the finishing sequence was fun with everyone delivering their big signature spots.)

WWE United States Championship Match: Rey Mysterio def. Shinsuke Nakamura via Disqualification 

  • Rating: ⭐️⭐️

Nakamura delivered strikes to Mysterio and followed up with a face buster. Nakamura went for the Kinshasa but Mysterio countered with an inside cradle for a near fall. Nakamura delivered a spinning wheel kick and followed up with a running knee strike into the corner. Nakamura went for a face buster on the ring apron but Mysterio countered by delivering a step-up ensuigiri. Mysterio delivered a baseball slide to Nakamura. Nakamura moved as Mysterio delivered a running senton from the ring apron to Miz on the floor. Mysterio delivered a springboard senton to Nakamura. Mysterio went for the 619 but Miz grabbed him by the legs. Miz rammed Mysterio into the guard rails and then attacked him inside the ring as the referee called for the DQ. 

  • Post-Match: Miz and Nakamura attacked Mysterio after the match. Rusev ran down to make the save. Lana then challenged Miz and Nakamura to a tag team match. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a fine match as it was nice to see Mysterio and Nakamura wrestle against each other.)

Rusev & Rey Mysterio (w/Lana) def. The Miz & Shinsuke Nakamura 

  • Rating: ⭐️⭐️ 1/4

Mysterio delivered a head scissors to Miz, went for the 619 but Nakamura stopped him by delivering a clothesline. Nakamura sent out some “Bad Vibrations” to Mysterio and followed up with a jumping knee drop for a near fall. Nakamura had the referee distracted as Miz delivered strikes to Mysterio on the floor. Rusev got the tag as he delivered a spinning wheel kick to Miz. They exchanged counters as Rusev delivered a head kick to Miz. Nakamura caused a distraction as Miz delivered the Skull Crushing Finale but Mysterio broke the count. Mysterio delivered a head scissors as Miz went into Nakamura. Mysterio delivered a double 619 to Miz and Nakamura. Finish of the match came when Rusev delivered the Machka Kick to Miz for the win. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a fine house show tag team match as everyone did good.)

A.J. Styles def. Samoa Joe in a Steel Cage Match 

  • Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/4

Joe delivered strikes to Styles in the corner. Styles delivered shoulder tackles to Joe in the corner. Joe blocked a suplex and delivered a face buster to Styles. Joe rammed Styles into the cage. Joe delivered a running splash to Styles into the cage. Styles charged but Joe caught him with a back elbow. Joe delivered a jumping knee drop to Styles for a near fall. Joe delivered a running back elbow and followed up with a step-up ensuigiri for a near fall. Styles moved as Joe went charging into the cage. Styles made a comeback by delivering the Phenomenal Blitz and followed up with sliding forearm. Styles delivered a middle rope reverse DDT for a near fall. Styles tried to escape but Joe stopped him by delivering an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Joe charged but Styles caught him with a tornado DDT. Styles went for the Styles Clash but Joe countered by catapult him into the cage. Joe delivered a back senton for a near fall. Styles went for a running forearm into the turnbuckle but Joe countered by delivering a uranage. Joe went to escape the cage but Styles stopped him. Styles then applied a Calf Crusher as Joe tapped out. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was easily the highlight of the show as both Joe and Styles worked hard and always put on a good match for the fans.)

-Overall: WWE Starrcade was fine show which had some good wrestling matches. The overall felling felt like a regular WWE house show with a big name added.
