WWE Mae Young Classic Review: Io Shirai soars into the Quarterfinals

Io Shirai def. Zeuxis 

  • Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/4

Io Shirai came out and got a big reaction as she felt a like a true superstar. The match started with some chain wrestling. Shirai delivered a dropkick. Shirai went for a springboard but Zeuxis delivered a right hand and followed up with a sliding dropkick. Zeuxis worked over the arm of the Shirai and then followed up with a running double knees into the turnbuckle for a near fall. Zeuxis charged but Shirai countered with a leg sweep and followed up with a slingshot dropkick. Shirai delivered an elevated double knees and followed up with a running double knees into the turnbuckle. Shirai charged and delivered a nice looking tope to Zeuxis on the floor. Shirai applied a cross face but Zeuxis broke free and delivered a Tiger Driver for a near fall. Zeuxis went for a top rope moonsault but Shirai moved and delivered a sliding dropkick. They battled on the top turnbuckle as Shirai delivered a top rope head scissors. Shirai delivered a double knee to the back of Zeuxis and followed up with a beautiful looking Asai Moonsault for the win. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a good match as both Io Shirai and Zexius worked really hard. Shirai is just so fun to watch as she’s so talented, her ring moment is flawless and has great charisma. I should mention that Io Shirai is my favourite wrestler and pick to win the Mae Young Classic.)

Deonna Purrazzo def. Xia Li via Submission 

  • Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/4

Purrazzo came out and also has the presence of a superstar. The match started with some chain wrestling. Xia applied a head scissors but Purrazzo broke free and bowed. Purrazo went for the Fujiwara Armbar but Xia countered by delivering leg kicks, a sliding leg drop and followed up with an elbow drop for a near fall. Purrazzo charged but Xia caught her with a head kick and followed up with a flying kick from the middle turnbuckle for a near fall. Purrazzo delivered a cartwheel into a dropkick for a near fall. Purrazo worked over the arm of Xia and then followed up by delivering a clothesline for a near fall. Purrazzo delivered a side Russian leg sweep and then transitioned into a Fujiwara Arm Bar but Xia countered into a rollup for a near fall. Purrazzo delivered an arm breaker for a near fall. Purrazzo applied a wrist lock but Xia broke free by delivering an arm drag and followed up with an elevated  dropkick. Purrazzo and Xia had a nice back-and-forth strike exchanged. Xia delivered a head kick for a near fall. Xia jumped off the turnbuckle but Purrazo caught her in a Fujiwara Armbar. Purrazo then applied a double Fujiwara Armbar as Xia tapped out. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a good match as both Purrazzo and Xia worked really hard. Xia impressed me in the tournament as she has has great facial reactions and her striking ability is pin point. Purrazzo has great ring presence and her ring movement is solid. I also like how Purrazzo finds different ways to apply her Fujiwara Arm Bar.)

Tegan Nox def. Nicole Matthews 

  • Rating: ⭐️⭐️ 2/4

Nox went for a tope but Matthews caught her with a right hand. Matthews delivered kicks to Nox in-between the ropes. Matthews delivered a running dropkick into the turnbuckle for a near fall. Matthews delivered elbow strikes and then applied a double wrist lock. Matthews delivered an overhead suplex for a near fall. Nox made a comeback by delivering strikes. Nox caught Matthews with a head butt and followed up with a running cannonball into the turnbuckle. Finish of the match came when Nox delivered a Shining Wizard for the win. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a solid match as both Matthews and Nox did good. Nox has great ring presence, facial reactions and plays the perfect babyface.) 

Mai Yim def. Kaitlyn via Submission 

  • Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/4

The match started with some chain wrestling. Kaitlyn delivered a sliding dropkick, a sliding clothesline and followed up with a triple leg drop for a near fall. Kaitlyn delivered a running cannonball into the turnbuckle for a near fall. Kaitlyn applied a body scissors but Mai broke free. Kailyn went for a sliding dropkick but Mai moved and slammed her knee on the ring apron. Mai worked over Kaitlyn’s legs. Mai delivered ground and pound strikes. Kaitlyn delivered  ground and pound strikes. Mai delivered a PK for a near fall. Kaitlyn delivered strikes, back-to-back scoop slams and followed with a spinning side slam for a near fall. Kaitlyn charged but Mai moved and delivered Eat Defeat for close a near fall. Kaitlyn delivered a spear but Mia kicked out for another close near fall. Finish of the match came when Mia applied a knee bar as Kaitlyn tapped out. 

(Amin’s Analysis: This was a good match as both Kaitlyn and Mai are really good wrestlers and both of them worked really hard. It was nice to see Kaitlyn compete inside a WWE ring again and always fun to see Mai wrestle as she’s so versatile.)
